This is prime running weather (especially in South Texas) but with holiday parties, shopping, hosting out-of-town guests, and other holiday chores, it may seem impossible to find time for a run. Here are a few tips to help you keep running during the holiday season: Talk to your Coach. Especially if it's a coach you are paying for. The key to having a succesful relationship with your coach is an open line of communication. Talk to your coach about what your plans are for the holiday season and meet with him or her about re-positioning some runs. Ask questions like," How will this affect my running goal?" and "What other options do I have if I cannot go out and run?" Be flexible with your schedule.Be prepared to run at different times of the day. If you normally run after work, but you have a holiday party to attend in the evening, wake up an hour early and go for a run before work. Splitting up your run can also help. Running shorter than what your schedule says is better than not running at all. Make Running a priority but make it realistic You should try to make running a priority. Take a look at your week and write down when you think you'll be able to squeeze in runs, just like you would other appointments. If you have runs scheduled, you're more likely to get them done. Make sure, however, that whatever you schedule is realistic. The stress of trying to squeeze in a run in the midst of a busy holiday day can make some people unhappy company. Don't comprimise your sanity or "good company" with trying to get out the door. Don't let cold weather be an excuse.Running can be exhilarating in cold weather. Yes, it is always tough to get out of bed on a cold morning but you will feel better for spending time out on the road. Your body temperature rises nearly 20% so 40 degree weather can feel like a pleasant 60 degrees. Remember to wear proper winter clothes and wear lights when it's dark outside. Be prepared with a home workout. Create a home workout routine for those times you can't make it to the gym. Crunches, push-ups, and many other exercises can be done without any gym equipment. Running up and down the stairs is a great cardio workout. Participate in a holday race.There are lots of fun races during the holiday season, from turkey trots to jingle bell runs. If you are traveling out of town for the holidays go online and find a race near you or find a local running store. Having an upcoming race will keep you motivated to continue running. Recruit Family and Friends Have your family and friends join you for a stroll or holiday race. Years ago, my brother and I participated in a Thanksgiving 10k and it has now turned in to a holiday tradition. Every Thanksgiving morning our family and friends come together and participate. Some may only participate as spectators but we are together as a family nonetheless. Happy Running this Holiday Season:) |
